Hiring a car in Florence to explore tuscany hills?

We are two Australians wanting to explore tuscany. Is it easy driving in Italy? We are in our late 50's and are experienced drivers. Do the cars have sat navs? Is it easy to find places and drive to them?

We drive on the other side of the road (be especially careful on roundabouts and intersections) but, apart from that, I would say it's easy enough. You can hire satnavs but surely it's just as easy to read a map? And certainly do not rely on them in the cities or hilltowns for they'll take you into the limited traffic zones and/or up streets that end in steps. The traffic in the countryside is very light even in summer, roads are well signposted, parking relatively easy too and, again, well signposted. Besides all this having a car is the only way to fully explore the beautiful countryside and smaller towns and villages and will allow you to stop as and when you want to take photographs, which is bound to be often.

It is not difficult driving outside the major towns such as Florence.

Rental cars will not have sat nav unless you pay extra. The charges are quite high, so you would do better to buy a satnav in Australia and get European maps for it. You can then get used to the satnav on familiar roads, and still have it available for you in Australia.

If you are from Australia, it is very confusing for everyone that your profile location shows Padua. It would be much better if you changed your profile to show where you actually live.

Here is a round up of all the driving regulations you need to know about before driving in Italy:

As you will read driving in the Tuscan countryside is really quite easy, but make sure you get good directions to take you out of Florence without entering the ZTL and return the car to an airport or some other drop off, do not attempt to drive back into central Florence or you are very likely to get a nasty fine.

Most rentals are not automatic if you need an automatic your best chance of getting one will be at an airport and you will pay more than you would for a manual transmission (stck shift).

Autoeurope is a good source for rentals. Do not book with AutoeuropA. Big difference; the second has had many complaints.
