Car hire

We are travelling to Pisa in September and want to hire a car to pick up from the airport. Can anyone recommend a company or Internet booking site to use. I've seen all the posts re gold car so nervous of which site to use. Has anyone any experience of booking car hire at Pisa through holiday autos?

Try Autoeurope.com. They are an excellent consolidator.

Another vote for Autoeurope.com or in your case, auto-Europe.co.uk. Of all our rentals, we have had the best experience with them.

Nowadays we use Avis or Hertz. We looked at the rates quoted for these two companies on the auto-europe site and then rang Avis and Hertz direct. We were quoted a much better rate. Hertz on top offer a 10% discount for AA members (Automobile Association) and Avis a 15% discount if you are a member of the British Airways Executive Club. They both include an additional driver at no extra charge. These rates were given to us two days ago for a rental out and back to Pisa Airport at the end of August.

I was quite happy with Budget from Pisa; booked direct with them and good price when booked many months in advance. Budget are part of Avis Group and share the same cars and return process at Pisa.

On our experience avoid Goldcar! They didn’t have enough staff or counter space at Pisa airport to handle the number of clients and consequently the queues were horrendous, delay long and all in a very hot building! Also if you have purchased CDW from anywhere other than Goldcar they require a 1300 Euro charge on your credit card! This charge is cancelled when you return the car if, of course, it is in pristine condition! Also the car allocated to us had some minor damage not on the documentation and had badly stained back seats again not documented. We demanded another vehicle and eventually got one but of course it all takes time and your departure is further delayed.

Not sure if you plan to drive and park in Pisa. When we were there we had to use on street parking a block or so away from our hotel. The next morning I found a car double parked next to ours and thought we would be trapped against the curb. But it only took one honk (the Philly method for double parked cars) for someone to quickly show, apologize and move their car. Felt so much like home.
