Car hire Pisa airport

First time travellers to Europe - travelling by train but getting car at Pisa airport to travel through Tuscany to Florence (3 day hire). We are coming from Manarola that morning, but do not think we can hire a car at La Spezia on a Sunday. After hearing general stories of driving in Italy, prohibitied areas and fines, queues at the airport, getting a bit concerned. Any tips on best company, things to do and avoid? We are hoping to book the car online in advance.

Thank you

Pisa airport is small, so I think it is unlikely that there would be any great delay in picking up a car there.

In Florence and Pisa, it is not always obvious which areas are prohibited to visitors' cars, although the signage is being improved. Elsewhere, you should assume that you are not allowed r\to drive within the walls. Look for the "No vehicles" sign: a red circle with white centre, like a speed limit sign with no numbers. Do not drive past such a sign.

AutoEurope is an agency that arranges cheap rentals with the major companies. The UK site is sometimes cheaper than the US one, so check out both www.autoeurope.com and www.auto-europe.co.uk

pisa airport is small...and pisa car rental too...maybe you have to queue half an hour...but no problem at all...in any case, better if you reserve the car in advance!!

enjoy

thank you both - we will follow up these leads.

My husband will be driving mainly through Tuscany - we have not yet figured out road maps. We have a large Michelin guide to Italy but it's a bit huge to cart around Europe. Can you suggest the best maps for our Pisa/Tuscany/Florence drive.

Thanks again - don't know what I would do without TA.
