Special place to visit between Florence - Venice?

We need help with the second half our our itinerary in Italy. We will be traveling in late June - early July with three children ages 15, 12, 10. We fly into Rome and depart out of Milan.

4 days in Rome (ample sight seeing)

3 days relaxing in Cortona

3 days in Florence (ample sightseeing)

After that we plan to spend a few days in Venice before we fly out of Milan but we have an uplanned week in between and would like to fit in a smaller destination (either between Florence and Venice or between Venice and Milan). We are trying to mix big cities: Rome, Florence & Venice with a few smaller, more relaxing spots along the way and would really appreciate any suggestions. Originally we were thinking of visiting Cinque Terre but that seem out of the way when traveling from Florence to Venice. Thank you for any suggestions!

Verona would make sense between Venice and Milan.

Between Florence and Venice, Ferrara! To our minds one of the most beautiful cities in all of Italy.

Verona or Padua. Both well worth a visit.

Another vote for Verona and Lake Garda - and also consider Cremona for the Violin Museum.

Ferrara and Padua are both lovely, so is Parma. Difficult decision!
