Travel between Rome and Florence

What is the best way to travel to smaller cities between Rome and Florence, for example Sienna, Assisi and Arezzo? We will also be staying in Arezzo to visit our daughter. I really don't want to rent a car. Will trains go to the smaller cities or are there buses or day tours?

There are trains between Florence and Siena which take around 1.5 hours. Buses take 1.25 hours and terminate in the centre of Siena rather than below the city.

There are many trains between Florence and Arezzo taking from 0.5 to 1.5 hours depending on type and speed of train.

Assisi would be best visited from Arezzo from where trains take around 1.5 hours, though there is a further journey by bus or taxi up the hill from the station to the centre.

For train times see http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html - use a date this week to see all fares as the Regional (R and RV) trains are NA online more than seven days in advance.

Check www.trenitalia.com - trains go to many of the smaller towns - check to see if they go where you want from where you are departing.

Thank you for your replies. I will definately check out that website. Has anyone done any wine tours through Tuscany? We won't be in a group, just a couple of us. So wondered if there are day tours or buses that can take you through the area, stop at vineyards etc? If so, anyone have any experience with a specific tour ... one they could recommend? If we can use train to get to smaller cities, we could hopefully get to the town the tour originates from.
