Which do I visit first? San Lorenzo church or Medici Chapels

I'm planning on spending an hour or so each at San Lorenzo church and The Medici Chapels on a Wednesday morning in February.

I have a Firenze Card voucher already purchased so hopefully won't need to queue?!? :)

I'll be approaching the Piazza San Lorenzo via Via L. Gori so I'll have the main facade of the church facing me first.

Researching the two places there is so much to see and I'm getting a little confused about the layout, having not been there before.

My questions are...

Do I go in the church first or proceed round the back to see the Medici Chapels first?

Is there an aesthetic benefit from seeing the church first or the chapels first?

As well as answering that one, I would be very grateful if someone would provide me with a little advice on how they may have ordered their own visit once inside these locations ie. what cloister led to where and where the staircase goes etc.etc. :)

As you can see I'm lost before I've even got there...ha ha!!

Thanks people, in advance (love this site!!)....

Re: post 2. I looked at the Ars Opulenta web site (Eugene M). Wish I had found it sooner I would have done a tour. The forbidden Florence tour seems interesting since I wondered about the influence of "forbidden" Florence without having any specific knowledge other than the likelihood that Michelangelo was gay.

Thanks for the facts Eugene. I've already prepared myself for the Biblioteca Laurenziana to be possibly closed. If it's open, great!

As for gelato...I hadn't heard of that one. I've already got a choice of three earmarked as I stroll my way back to the B&B.....Gelataria Carabe, Festival del Gelato and Perche No?....all of them get good reviews, I can't do them all, it'll all depend on what stage I get that gelato feeling!

Thanks ladybracknell too! I would love to stroll across to Piazza Michelangelo and San Minato but I'm not convinced I can do that as well

Like deciding not to climb the Duomo, people may think it's a crazy omission.

But I've figured out a plan for "my Oltrarno day" this way......a morning stroll across Ponte Vecchio, a lengthy visit at Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens, then head west, lunch from Gusta Panini (hopefully, by what I've read!) then a visit to Santa Maria del Carmine. Head north, call in at Gelataria la Carraia by the bridge for gelato, cross back over the river and head towards base, visiting Santa Trinita on the way. I know myself well enough to say that will be enough. I'll want a relaxing evening meal and early back to my room after a long day of portraiture, gardens and frescoes.

So yes, 'that view' at Piazza Michelangelo, well....h'm you can't do it all!!

'La Carraia" - probably my favourite!

"and, for me, the thrill never wanes." - Lady B. - spot on. Whenever I come back to Florence, I always feel that I am coming home. Eugene, Tomaso and the like would probably scoff at some foreigner who comes here a couple of times a year, but I love the place and still always discover something new.

Oh don't worry David, you can see the views from Piazzale Michelangelo and visit San Miniato al Monte on your next visit - you are bound to be back before too long. This city is addictive, as people like myself, Pericoloso, LadyBracknell and countless others know only too well!

Of course the Boboli Gardens will afford you some decent views of the city and if you were using the usual entrance ticket for the Boboli Gardens you would also have had free access to the lovely Bardini gardens which also offer fine views of the city, but I know you will have the Firenze card and sadly the Bardini gardens are not yet covered on it, but are probably not at their finest in February anyway. Oh well somewhere else to add to your list for the next visit - they are quite wonderful in April when the wisteria tunnel is in bloom!
