Renting a Car in Florence

We are just in the planning stages right now. We are thinking of renting a car in Florence and dropping it off in Orvieto and then catching the train into Rome.

First, any suggestions on rental car agencies that service Orvieto? We will be dropping it off on a weekday. Also, is the car rental agency difficult to find in Orvieto?

Second, can anyone tell me which rental car agencies do not charge drop off fees for one way?

Thank you!

You will need a major company for a one-way rental, and all the majors will have offices in both Florence and Orvieto. AutoEurope is an agency that arranges cheap rentals with the major companies. The UK site is sometimes cheaper than the US one, so check out both www.autoeurope.com and www.auto-europe.co.uk

I believe that Hertz is the only major company that charges a one-way fee for rentals within Italy.

I wonder that you don't consider returning the car at FCO and taking a fixed price taxi from there directly to your hotel €48.

The Intercity from Orvieto to Termini is €15.50, the Regionale is €7.50 plus you then need a taxi from Termini to your hotel.

The car drop offs at FCO are all inside the covered parking, indicated by a P with a roof on and it is easy to get there via the airport autostrada. They are open all days and longer hours than most places and the taxis are waiting outside.

Make sure you get good directions to exit Florence without commiting a ZTL violation and watch out for the bus lanes too, which are also policed by cameras and heavy fines.

Hertz and Avis are close to Orvieto train station. Other companies are further away.

If you drive to Fiumicino Airport, fuel and tolls will probably cost around €25. It takes longer to get from Orvieto to the airport by car than it takes by train to get to Roma Termini station, very near the city centre..

Thank you for all your information. I think we will drop the car off in Orvieto to avoid paying the cost of tolls.
