The Italian train web site is: www.trenitalia.it. It is, however, quite easy to book trains from Florence to Pisa and you will have no problem doing it while you are in Florence.

I 2nd the motion that you do not have to ever book your train to Pisa ahead of time. There are plenty and never full.

very true, however if the price is the same then why not buy the ticketless option on the website. it is more convienent, easy and one less thing to worry about when you get there.

Why buy a Italy train ticket in advance ?

Ticket refunds or changes from Trenitalia are costly and not easy.

The following is a summary of the “General Regulations” described at

trenitalia.com/en/…viaggio5.html

trenitalia.com/en/…disposizioni_generali.html

If you buy a paper ticket from point A to point B and decide not to use it within 60 days, it will be refunded at 80%. Once the ticket has been stamped [required before boarding] and irregardless of the train having departed, a refund must be requested within 30 minutes at the departure station and in this case the refund will be 80%. After 30 minutes of stamping and within 24 hours, the refund is 50%. After 24 hours of stamping, the ticket has no value.

With the Trenitalia Ticketless service, you buy a ticket for and reserve a seat on a specific train. You can collect your paper ticket up to 10 minutes prior to departure or you can board the train and receive the ticket onboard after providing the PNR reservation number.

If you buy a ticket using the Ticketless service, until the departure of the reserved train, you can make an unlimited number of reservation changes via the Internet or the Biglietteria Telefonica phone reservations service but a change of the ticket from/to destinations is not allowed. All refunds for Ticketless tickets are made by request to the Biglietteria Telefonica phone reservations service. There is a 20% refund penalty from the time the ticket is purchased until the departure of the train reserved. From the departure of the train originally reserved and within one hour of its departure, the refund is 50%. One hour after the departure of the train originally reserved, no tickets are refunded.

Keeping this in mind, you should consider buying your tickets 1 or 2 days in advance at the train station or travel agent in Florence.
