We will be staying in Florence the week of May 20. We would lilke to see an opera in a historic opera house. Any suggestions. Thanks.

There is a lot of music in Florence. Summer season is from June to october with concerts and recitals i churches and outdoors in villas, gardens and museums

The municipal opera house is Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, which was built in 1882. Not the most exciting building in Florence but a reasonable opera house. To check on their programme see www.maggiofiorentino.com

Much older, built in 1656, is Teatro della Pergola, Via della Pergola, one of Italy's oldest theatres. It is mostly used for chamber music and small scale operas. Many are arranged by Amici della Musica - check www.amicimusica.fi.it

Teatro Goldoni, Via Santa maria 15, Oltrano is early 18th century and quite small - 400 seats. It has the same management as Teatro del Maggio and again is used for chamber music, small scale opera and ballet from time to time.

Teatro verdi, Via Ghibellina is many used by Orchestra della Toscana. See www.teatroverdifirenze.it for programme.

Hope you find something to your taste.
