Taormina to Tropea to Palinuro

We are arriving Sept 30 into Sicily and want to hit these three (above) places. We enjoy beach, wine, chilling, good food and local stuff. Any suggestions for these three towns? Thanks so much.

Hello goldieallard,

Where will you arrive in Sicily?

Are you flying to Catania?

Catania is the preferred airport for Taormina.

Do you plan to hire a car?

And where do you plan to depart Italy to fly home?

Good morning!

Yes, fly into Catania (from Rome)

Still trying to decide on renting a car (we've driven in Italy multiple times) or use train or another means of public transportation to get to our three destinations.

We hope to take a high speed train back to Rome to fly out (probably from Naples area)

Any suggestions are appreciated

Hello goldieallard,

Whether you would hire a car during your time in Taormina might depend on your intended day trip destinations.

Interbus runs direct bus service from Aeroporto Catania to Taormina.

Avoid driving in the city of Catania.

You wouldn't need the car during your time in Taormina.

Many excursions run from Taormina.

If you intend day trips, and you don't prefer excursions, then perhaps consider hiring a car.

You would require an excursion, car, or driver if you'd like to visit any of the Etna wineries.

You might hire the car as needed for the day during your time in Taormina.

California parks their own cars for free, which is a terrific advantage in a town like Taormina with challenging and expensive parking.

It's expensive to ferry the car to Calabria, and some suppliers don't permit their cars on ferries. Be sure to notify the supplier of your intentions to ferry their car, and secure appropriate insurance during the rossing, since insurance doesn't always cover the car at sea.

Plan to hire a car in Calabria. You would appreciate a car in Calabria.

There are no high speed trains in Sicily, but yes, take the high speed train from Naples to Rome.

Vagabonda - just curious: have you lived in Sicily? If so, what region?
