We're thinking of renting a very nice holiday home in Avola next summer. The idea is to use Avola as a base to explore south east Sicily. Does anyone know what it's like in summer? Are there good clean sandy beaches nearby and decent restaurants?
Is Avola a suitable tourist destination? The Google street view images of the town do it no favours whatsoever, especially the parts close to the sea. It seems to consist of ramshackle, tumble down half finished buildings and litter strewn open stretches of scrubby land and potholed roads. Is this a mistaken and unfair impression of the town?
