Driving is not a big issue in Sicily if you are a self-confident and good driver. Public transport is not very good in Sicily, so I advise renting a car. It could be cheaper if you rent one at Catania airport, other than Taormina which is very touristy. Taormina is a 45-50 min. drive from Catania airport and is easy to reach.

I would recommend renting from autoeurope. www.autoeurope.it

I have been renting from autoeurope for 3 years now, never a problem. Go for a reputable company when renting via autoeurope like Europcar, Hertz or Avis.

July is prime season in Taormina when parking is challenging and parking is pricey.

You wouldn’t require a car for your intended day trips – You could take public transport (bus or train), which is good around Taormina, or there are many excursions available.

You might consider renting a car for the day you plan to visit Siracusa, although you could take an excursion or public transport as well – California rents by the day in Taormina with the added bonus of free parking for their cars.

If you decide to rent a car for the entire time of your stay, rent the car at Catania’s airport.

It's very safe - just be sure to take lots of tranquilisers and rosary beads for those odd moments when navigating Taormina area! :)

Taormina really isn't overly challenging to drive!

Not overly challenging for Italians :) but I have seen some very shaken north Europeans, Canadians and Americans. Only for the confident driver I'd say. And hire the smallest car you can!!

You can avoid the historic centre by parking at the parking stations, but if not confident, especially with driving on the opposite side, then don't hire a car!

You'd appreciate hiring the smallest car that would meet your needs for ease of parking and maneuvering narrow streets throughout Sicily.
