Mount Etna

Hi we will be in Catania for 3 nights in the first week in October and we are planning on doing a tour on Mount Etna. There seems to be a lot of choices does anybody have any recommendations on the best one to go on? We are both fit and active aged 34 & 40. We are looking to do an active tour which would allow us to get or trek to the highest point. Is it possible to get to the crater where the most recent eruptions have occurred? Looking forward to any responses.

Thanks Andrew

Would you require transport from Catania, or do you plan to take the AST bus from Catania to Rifugio Sapienza?

If you were to take the bus, you would then join the Società Cooperativa Gruppo Guide Alpine Etna Sud alpine guides.

Hi Vagabonda, we were hoping to get a tour that would pick us up from our hotel in Catania, If that wasn't possible we would make our way to any meeting point the tour would start from.

Hi Andrew700,

It's absolutely possible to arrange an Etna tour with a company that would pick-up in Catania and provide transportation.

Etna Sicily Touring runs a good tour and reliable service.

Try Sebastiano Melita as a guide and driver. His e-mail address is sicilywithsebastian@gmail.com He lives in Catania and personalized our tour to do whatever we chose. Mt. Etna was stormed in the day we were there, but this part of Sicily is PARADISE. Best of luck!

It would be lovely if Sebastiano had his Partita IVA on his website as required by Italian law, but he does have his taxi number - Sebastiano Melita - Giardini Naxos

Taxi License No. 8 issued by the City of Giardini Naxos (ME)

Hi Vagabonda,

We are in Cefalu, and wondered about visiting Etna from the northern side. I've heard the town of Randazzo is close, and according to the Lonely Planet, you can do 4WD excursions from Linguaglossa. Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Welcome to Sicily elliceruth!

Have you hired a car?

Randazzo is almost a 3-hour drive from Cefalù, so not very close at all, and Linguaglossa is well over 3 hours.

The Etna Nord 4WD excursions depart from Piano Provenzana, which you would access from Linguaglossa.

frommers.com/images/destinations/maps/jpg-20…

Gruppo Guide Etna Nord runs excursions from Linguaglossa.

Etna Sud at Rifugio Sapienza via Nicolosi is also a 3-hour drive from Cefalù.

Hi everyone, we ended up going with EtnAround tour company with a guy called Marco. It was fantastic just 4 of us. We were picked up from our hotel and another couple from another hotel then went up to the very top of Etna, it was amazing. We then had a picnic with local produce and wine and went into former lava cave, then to the Ox valley, all in all it was a fantastic day and Marco was great, he spoke clear English and it was very personalized. I'm not sure how to post links or anything but the tour company is etnAround, if you look it up you'll be able to find it easy enough. We couldn't decide who to go with until we read reviews on this tour. Anyway hope this helps you out and have fun.
