Etna with a 5 year old child

Hi all,

we will be in Sicily in June and considering going to Mount Etna. Our child is very much interested in vulcanos and he would love to go and see active vulcano. I read a lot of reviews, but found only one or two where people were going up there with children.

Is somebody aware how high we could go with a child at this age, he is fit, doing other sports, but never really climbed before. I guess cable car would not be a problem, but would it be possible that he sees a crater (at least from a distance). I would like to promise him something i could deliver later

Many thanks in advance

If your child is very much interested in volcanoes and he would love to see an active volcano, and he can cope with the walking, then visit Mount Etna. Whether a visit to Etna is successful with a child very much depends on the individual child and that child’s ability to trek the mountain.

You could surely walk the Silvestri Craters at Rifugio Sapienza, and then take the funivia. Children from 5-10 years of age pay €15,50 for the funivia, and the rate is €29 for adults.

You might then take the jeep higher up the volcano - A guide is obligatory with the jeep. There’s about an hour’s trek after the jeep, and the entire tour takes about 2,5-hours.

Rates will increase in June, but expect to pay €55 per adult and €42 for a child for the complete tour with funivia, jeep, trek, and guide.

Visit early morning on a good weather day - Hope you and your child enjoy!

Took my 4 yr old and 6 yr old to see the crater and snow last year, no problem to get the cable car towards the top then some really cool 4wd cars with guides to the top.

In 3 months in Sicily it was our kids favourite adventure, I,m sure you will both have a great time.

The summit can be cold, even in June, so dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes, and enjoy!

The weather can change quickly and it can be windy on the mountain - Be sure to bring a waterproof windbreaker, scarf (protection from fumes), sunglasses, sunscreen, water, and snacks.

You just drive to reifugio then park your car, go to the fumicar and pay, you get the same as all tour companies, you just pay less.

From where Metestreus? And do you plan to rent a car and arrive on Etna yourself, or would you like a tour from a base in Catania or Taormina?

If you plan to arrive at Rifugio Sapienza by car and take the funivia and jeep (guide required for the jeep), contact the guides at Società Cooperativa Gruppo Guide Alpine Etna Sud.

Hi,

We will arrive by car from pazollo where we are staying with family. We are open to suggestions as to which is best. We have heard of magicofsicily. What are your recommendations? Thank you.
