Drop off rental car in Palermo

We will be renting a car at the Catania airport and afer travelling around we will be staying in Palermo for a few days. We wanted to drop the car off in the city but it looks like many places are not open on Sundays but a few seem to be open until 12:30. Seems like the airport is quite a distance out of town. I've also seen advise to avoid driving in Palermo. There's a drop-off on Via Crispi which doesn't seem to be right in the heart of the city. I wasn't sure if we should try to make the early closing time or would it be better to drive the extra distance and drop off at the Palermo airprt-and take the bus into the city. What do you think?

Welcome to Sicily!

If you ever had to drive in Palermo, a Sunday would be the best time of the week – There’s little traffic.

You could also return the car in Cefalu and take the train from Cefalu to Palermo.

But if you decided to return the car at the airport, the Autolinee Prestia e Comandè bus would be very convenient.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like the Cefalu car rentals may be closed on Sundays. Airports may be the only option unless you know of any that may be open? We will be coming from Piazza Armerina hoping to visit Villa Casale before heading to Palermo so we'd welcome any suggestions for other drop off sites. I'm beginning to think dropping off at the airport may be the best option if we want to see the mosiacs before we head for Palermo.

Airports may appear to be the only opened car rental options. Closed agencies are a problem for pick-up, but not necessarily for drop-off. Many agencies offer a drop-off box – Ask your car rental agency.

Just park the car and drop off the key in the box. Usually the paperwork is also required, so you may want a duplicate copy for your own records. Check the car carefully on arrival for any damages and be sure the rental agency indicates damages on your contract. Take a dated photo of the car on arrival and another dated photo on departure. Should there be any later questions about damages to the car, you would have some documentation.

The mosaics are worth any inconvenience!!!!

The airport would be a viable option - The bus to Palermo is very convenient and you would appreciate the flexibility of schedule.
