Help please

Iam sure this information may exist already on a previous forum but anyway....

Girlfriend and I are planning 11 days in sicily. we are flying into and out of trapani. I would like to strike a healthy mixture of sites and relaxing. I have heard taormina is fantastic and so would like to encorprate it somehow.

Dont suppose anyone has a ready made itinary with places to stay (not too expensive but nice), places to see, things to do etc.

Kind of worried we will miss something but am also conscious that i dont want to spend 11 days rushing from place to place. how long does it take to get around?

on that note is it best to just rent a car?

hope someone can help, thanks in advance!

To answer two of your issues:

-with 11 days, you can see a lot but you will definitely miss a lot as well. Don't try to see everything; just decide what's most important and focus on those things.

-yes, definitely rent a car. To me, there's no substitute for being able to go where you want, when you want.

Beyond that - what sites interest you the most - antiquities, Medieval history, architecture, spectacular natural settings, etc.?

My suggestion, especially if you want to incorporate relaxation, is to focus on the west side of the island as you're coming in to Trapani. Draw a line on a map from Cefalu south to Agrigento and focus on that half of the island. You'll have to give up Taormina, which is spectacular, as well as a lot of other worthwhile locales, but you'll be able to see a lot during the day and still get back to your hotel to relax and enjoy whatever town you've chosen as your destinations. You might want to consider three bases - Castellammare or Scopello, Agrigento, and Cefalu, for example.

Hi Stan023Dublin – Welcome to Sicily!

When will you be travelling?

What time will you arrive and depart?

An early arrival would allow some time to travel a distance from the airport. A late arrival would require spending your first night near the airport. A late departure would permit spending your last night a distance from the airport, but an early departure would require an accommodation near the airport.

You certainly could strike a balance between touring sites and relaxing, and with 11 days, you could easily see Taormina, and Mount Etna as well.

Hire a car at Birgi – Birgi is 377 km from Taormina, and it would take 03h56 to drive.

Take autostradas whenever possible - Check driving routes on ViaMichelin.

The Michelin Green Guide ranks sights, and may help you gauge which sights would be the most significant to see.

Places to stay would come after deciding what to see and your route.

Best Wishes!

thanks for the suggestions,

we get in around 5 in the afternoon so we could maybe stay in palermo night 1.

night 2 palermo also

night 3 cefalu

night 4 cefalu

night 5 taormina

night 6 taormina

night 7 taormina

night 8 ?

night 9 ?

night 10 trapani

we fly out at about 9.30 in the morning so probably need to stay in area.

does this seem feasible? any suggestions for accomadation? is camping a viable alternative anywhere. If we stayed in a hotel it would have to be reasonably priced. (50- 80 euro a night.)

thanks again, much appreciated, if anyone needs advice on dublin ask away!

Thanks for your offer Stan023Dublin!

Your itinerary is feasible, but you wanted a healthy mix of sites and relaxing – Unless you plan on taking excursions from Taormina, your itinerary is heavy on the relaxing, but it doesn’t offer many sites.

Do you want to explore Palermo? With such a late arrival, you really wouldn’t be able to visit any of Palermo’s sites.

ake Interbus from Trapani to Palermo – Hire a car on your departure from Palermo.

You could drive directly to Cefalu. And if you’d like to see sites, consider only one night in Cefalu.

Siracusa, Piazza Armerina, or Agrigento are possibilities for Night 8.

With your existing itinerary, consider a night in Piazza Armerina and visit the Villa Romana.

Spend your last two nights around Trapani-Erice. Visit Segesta and Erice.

You could camp around Cefalu and in Western Sicily.
