first time visitors to sicily

We are a young couple hoping to visit Sicily for 6 days in late May. We plan to fly to Catania airport early Sunday morning, stay there for the night and then move onto Taormina for 2 nights or 3 nights.

We would still have at least 3 more nights in this case. Our questions for the experts are :) :

1. Shall we go to Milazzo and stay there and make daily trips to the volcanic islands from there? Or shall we stay on one of the volcanic islands? Which is more preferable?

2. Or, shall we prefer Cefalu instead?

We look forward to sunbathing, eating and dining and hope to finish most of touristic excursions during the first day in Catania. Which brings us to another question...

Is Sunday a good day to spend in Catania? Or would every place (historic or for shopping etc) be closed on that day?

And, could anyone possibly tell us if this sounds like a nice plan for the trip or shall we consider another formulation.

Thanks a lot!

Catania’s Pescheria is certainly worth a visit!

Catania's Fish Market:

On Sundays, the square fills with antiques, electronics, books and paraphernalia.

Fresh fish at Catania Fish Market, Sicily, Italy

When: Daily

Where: Catania Fish Market

Opening Hours: 5am-11.30am

Famous for the variety and freshness of its produce, the picturesque and noisy Catania fish market is as old as the city itself. Visitors can watch the fishermen using their unorthodox sales skills to persuade people into buying their catch of the day. Along with squid, swordfish and a myriad of other seafood, the market also has wine, extra virgin olive oil and other key ingredients used in the local cuisine.

Here’s an earlier thread that may be helpful:

You would be fine arriving at Milazzo at 18:00. If you arrive at 18:00 and take the hydrofoil to Lipari, you will arrive on Lipari at 18:55.

For hydrofoil schedules to the Aeolians, check Ustica Lines. Milazzo will have the most options for you and will be the best port for departure. May will see still be the Winter schedule.

Ustica Lines:

Take the train from Taormina to Milazzo. Trains connect Milazzo's train station to the Palermo-Messina line. Then take an AST bus from Milazzo’s train station to the quayside which is 3 km south of the center of town.

Lipari has the best connections, the only real town and the islands best restaurant – Filippino.

Michelin-starred, typical local cuisine, and informal ambiance, Filippino offers excellent fish dishes.

If your heart is with Panarea, stay with it and have your larger meal at lunch (as the Italians do!!). Then just have a light dinner. Dinner begins late and transport between islands would be an issue for you.

Cefalu is not a convenient base for day trips during the Winter schedule – hydrofoils only depart on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays at 15:20. Milazzo is your better port.

Albergi Del Paradiso is up a hill, so not as convenient for dinner as hotels in the center. Cefalu really lacks charming hotels, but has many great restaurants. Albergi Del Paradiso is a member of Italy’s Charme & relax hotels and it has been updated. Villa gaia may be a better option.

Best Wishes!
