A3 autostrada

Hello there,

I'm thinking to travel to Sicily in next September, rent a car in Palermo (I'll arrive there from Germany), stay 5 days in the island, and then drive to Positano.

3 questions:

- Which are the top 10 things to visit in that 5 days in Sicily?

I'm thinking in making nigth in :

Palermo

Agricento

Siracusa

Taormina

Taormina

-How is the idea to drive from Messina to Positano? (I read in some 2011 post, that the autostrada were under construction.

- Any advise of a tour operator where I can buy the excursions?

thanks very much in advance

Carlos I can tell you about the drive its terrible, so many roadworks, steep and windy roads, try the ferry between Naples Ann palermo, a lot less stressful.

Welcome to Sicily Charliem61!

Avoid driving in Palermo – Rent the car after you depart Palermo.

The A3 Reggio Calabria-Salerno has been undergoing a 15-year long reconstruction program, so expect delays and check road conditions. Traffic would be lighter at night and early morning, but expect trucks, except for Sundays, but traffic is heavier on weekends around the seaside.

Check this site for road conditions along the A3.

car rental or train from naples to Palermo:

Five days is little time to see so many destinations!

You might consider a scenic transfer from Palermo to Siracusa or Taormina via Agrigento – Contact Tour of Sicily.

Take the overnight TTT Lines ferry from Catania to Naples – The ferry saves the cost of a hotel.

Best wishes!

Autostrada A3 is a nightmare. Avoid driving from Messina to Positano.

In addition to what Vagabonda suggested, consider that there are also ferries form Messina to Salerno

Prego Charliem61,

The Caronte schedules aren't the most convenient, but a better option than driving the A3 - Driving the Amalfi Coast also isn't recommended.

Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa, and Taormina were the towns on your original list - There's no need for changes. These are some of Sicily's top destinations.
