Our wonderful Sicilian adventure with Paolo

We have recently returned from a wonderful holiday in June and July to the beautiful island of Sicily with its ancient sites, history, culture and breathtaking scenery. We discovered the magic and beauty of eastern and southern Sicily through the eyes Paolo Mortellaro of Handy Sicily whilst travelling with him for week. We fell a little in love with Sicily during our visit and thank Paolo for that.

We had plans to visit western Sicily but did not want to miss eastern and southern Sicily and were looking for a way to tour around that area. How fortunate that we found Handy Sicily and Paolo Mortellaro on the web. Paolo made it easy to arrange our itinerary as he responded promptly and was adaptable to our needs. We paid our deposit through the secure Handy Sicily website (pay pal) and the balance whilst there.

Our Sicilian adventure started from the moment that Paolo met us at Catania airport and commenced his introduction to the Sicilian history, culture and food. Paolo’s passion for Sicily, his knowledge of its history and culture and his courtesy and good humour all made for a wonderful week. We travelled in the comfort of his Mercedes and felt fortunate to be travelling with someone who had great knowledge of Sicily, its roads, spots to visit, places to eat and things to notice.

Paolo organised a wonderful stay for us at Azienda Agriturismo Leone near Noto, where we stayed for six nights with Laura and Corrado enjoying the wonderful fresh Sicilian cuisine all made with ingredients grown on their farm. Laura makes the best cannoli, caponata and ricotta. We needed to arrive in Palermo and so Paolo suggested an itinerary with an overnight stay in Agrigento allowing us to visit the Valley of the Temples and then arrive at our Palermo hotel.

Our eastern Sicily tour included a “Montalbano Day” visiting the sites where filming takes place for the Inspector Montalbano series. To our delight we not only visited the sites but unexpectedly and amazingly saw Moltobano, Luca Zingaretti, leaving the “police station” in Scicli, as he was finishing his filming for the day.

A highlight of our tour was a visit to Palazzolo Acrieide on the day of the San Paolo Festa. What a delight to be part of this festival with its explosions of fireworks, streamers and drumming and to witness the blessing of the lavender, animals and bread and to see the crowds of people watching the procession of the statue of St Paul. Paolo invited us to return to Palazzolo Acrieide with his family in the evening to see the night lights and be part of the passagetta, which was a special treat.

Each day of our Handy Sicily holiday brought new adventures. When we thought the holiday could not get any better, it did! If you are looking for a very personal way of travelling to Sicily and wish to see this beautiful island through the eyes of local then look no further than Paolo Mortellaro and Handy Sicily.

Paolo requested down payment through Pay Pal. Then after we began our tour I gave him half in cash and half on our credit card.
