Help please for Western Sicily

Myself, my wife and one year old daughter will be spending 10 days around Trapani at the end of May and are looking for a bit of advice. We will spend a couple of nights around Trapani and then head to Scopello for 3-4 nights.

After that though, we are a little bit confused. We were going to spend a few nights in San Vito but we would prefer to spend time in a more authentic small Sicilian town (like Scopello) rather than an “identi-kit” beach resort. We would like to go to the south of the island (near Sciacca) but are having difficulty finding a place that would appeal to us. We enjoy the sea and we would like a genuine attractive Sicilian town, preferably on the coast as our Southern base.

Any Suggestions?.

Welcome to Sicily rebelsafc,

If your flight departs Trapani, you might consider staying in Trapani at the end of your holiday to position for your departing flight.

Will you hire a car?

With the exception of towns like Castellammare del Golfo or a hamlet like Scopello, many of Western Sicily’s coastal communities tend to be larger cities like Trapani or Marsala – Western Sicily really hasn’t developed its coastal potential.

Why does it have to be Southern Sicily?

Cefalù is the genuine attractive coastal Sicilian town that you're describing.

A quiet place in Sicily:

In addition to the transport option mentioned in the above thread, SAIS Trasporti also runs bus service between Palermo and Cefalù.

Palermo-Cefalù: 13.00, 14.30, 18.30

Cefalù-Palermo: 6.35, 7.45, 15.00

Excursions from Cefalu

If your flight arrives very late, you might begin in Trapani, but end in Marsala, and then you could still explore some of Sicily's far southwestern corner.

Thank you Vagabonda

We just thought that the coastline around Southern Sicily looked nice. Maybe we could do a day trip and visit Selinute etc for a day. Cefalu looks like an option.

We are hiring a car so traveling should be no problem. How long is the journey from Castellammare del Golfo to Cefalu, and then from Cefalu back to Trapani/Marsala?

On another topic we will probably look to do a day trip to Favignana also. Previously we would have hopped on the ferry and hired a bicycle to explore the island but now with a little bambino that is not an option. Can we take the car on a ferry to Favignana and does it cost much? Do the ferry times suit doing a day trip?

Thanks again

Prego rebelsafc,

You really have many good options....

Since you’re driving and you’d also like to see Selinunte, you might consider the areas around Marinella di Selinunte, or even Porto Paolo, near Menfi. The beaches are lovely here. These are very local fishermen towns, not as developed as Cefalù.

A base around this area would be convenient for exploring Sicily’s southern and western coasts.

Where to go in Sicily?

Siremar runs ferry service from Trapani to Favignana – There’s frequent service between Trapani and Favignana, so there's no problem day tripping.

Check all driving routes and estimated driving times and distances on ViaMichelin.

Castellammare del Golfo is 133km from Cefalù and would take an estimated 01h37 to drive, depending on traffic around Palermo. Mid-day and Sundays are the best times to drive this route around Palermo.

Cefalù is about 2+ hours from Trapani, and about 2,5 hours from Marsala.

However to avoid driving Palermo’s horrific ring road, you might consider a southern route along the coast via Agrigento for a night. It’s about a 2,5 hour drive from Trapani to Agrigento via the A29 and the SS115. Spend the night in Agrigento, see the Valley of the Temples and then drive onward from Agrigento to Cefalù, 2 hours.
