The easiest route is to go entirely by water, from the airport to San Marco. You can do this quickly and expensively, with a private water taxi (about 120 Euro), or more slowly and cheaper on the Alilagua water bus.

Either the orange or the blue lines would work: http://alilaguna.it/

You could take a land bus to Piazzale Roma and transfer there to the vaporetto, but it would cost as much as the Alilaguna and take longer, not to mention the need to switch transit modes.

Water Taxies are more like €110 still expensive, the Alilaguna ferry costs €15 but does take time over an hour, but if you intend to buy a Venice card ( Vaporetto pass) the Bus is discounted , time wise quicker than the Alilaguna.

"bus to the dock then the vapereto to st marks"

If you want to, you can take either the express ATVO bus or ACTV (city) bus line 5 to Piazzale Roma, where there is a vaporetto stop ("dock", if you like) from which line 1 will take you to S. Marco. You can buy tickets for both buses either on the bus or in the arrivals area, and for the vaporetto, at the vaporetto stop (where you can also buy a travelcard, which you could also buy online: http://www.veniceconnected.com/node/1483).

The blue, green and orange (gold, most direct) Alilaguna routes all serve S. Marco: http://www.alilaguna.it/en/lines/lines-map - and if you want to, you can buy your ticket online: http://www.alilaguna.it/en/tickets1/fares

Note that there are several vaporetto and Alilaguna stops near S. Marco: S. Marco Vallaresso (vaporetto) and S. Marco Giardinetti (Alilaguna) are close together on the "left" (West?) side of S. Marco, see europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/san_ma… - while S. Zaccaria, served by the faster "gold" line - is on the "right" or East side: which would be more convenient for your hotel depends on exactly where it is, "near Saint Marks Square" doesn't narrow it down enough.

You can also get a shared water taxi, also operated by Alilaguna, see www.venicelink.com/index.php… and venice.nu/boats-trains-buses/…
