what does "moderately priced" mean exactly? In Venice there is a differnt scale, considering it is an island with limited real estate.

If you stay on the island, everything is pretty close. Venice is not large like Rome.

If a hotel provides breakfast then they are subject to various regulations thus increasing the price of a stay. Those that do not offer such a service are therefore able to offer accommodation at a lower price. I would recommend Allogia alla Scala. It's but three minutes from Rialto and five from San Marco and a very friendly place.

Check through the Tripadvisor Venice Hotels list by clicking on the button on the left of this page. Read the user comments carefully to help you find the type of Hotel you require at an appropriate price.

All parts of Venice are safe and nowhere is far away. You can walk everywhere unless you wish to visit the outlying islands - Murano, Mazzorbo, Burano Torcello, the Giudecca and the Lido. in which case a water bus ticket is 6.50 euros and period discount tickets are available.

You ca also stay in a convent. They are affordable , clean and of course safe. Venice is not that large, so walking takes you to most places.
