Venento Region in October 2010 - suggestions for a base?

Hello,

We are staying in The Veneto Region for 4 nights in October and are looking for a central base to travel the region.

I would appreciate recommendations - we prefer local flavour, b&bs and small pensions.

Thank you! Sincerely,

Laurel

Myself I would spend the four nights in Venice. There is so much there you would not have to travel outside. If you do not want to do Venice then the beautiful city of Verona would be a good choice to explore the area.

Not sure if you want to stay in the city or outside but if you don't mind country living I can recommend a B&B just outside Ponte di Piave about 20 minutes east of Treviso.

What do you want to see in the Veneto?

Some very fussy acquaintances liked this agriturismo between Padua and Vicenza:

I would suggest Padua if you are not wanting to stay in Venice itself. A city of many beautiful artworks and architecture. However, if this is a first visit to the area, choose Venice.

Thank you. We actually are staying in Venice for four nights, then moving to Veneto Region, then Tuscany, and finally, Florence.

I'd love the recommendation that the "fussy people" (!) liked.

Ooops - i meant that I'd love the recommendation for the B&B.

Our focus (other than food and wine) is experiencing historic villas (palladian architecture), art, and architecture in general.

thanks again.

What do you mean, you'd love the recommendation? I've given you the link.

If you want to see the place described and recommended, go to the Italy forum at www.fodors.com and do a search for the name of the B&B. The poster's name is tedgale.

You could stay in Vicenza then, making sure you are there on a Wednesday when Villa Rotonda is open to the public. The town has so many examples of Palladian architecture including a theatre and the magnificent basilica (not a church) in the centre. Worth a visit if you are not staying.
