curious bird statues on venice balconies

Just came back from a wonderful holiday and I noticed big red penguin-like statues(?) in groups on some balconies along the Grand Canal. And, no, I wasn't imbibing in too much limoncello!

Can anyone tell me what they are? My guess is they're there to scare away birds from landing...but I could be waaaaay wrong.

They were penguins, I saw them too. I think that they were just on the Versace balcony, I don't know if this is some corporate thing or if it is something to do with the Bienalle Art Exhibition.

I saw them on two separate balconies just a few weeks ago.

I saw them, too. I thought they were kinda cute. I'm sure they are considered some sort of "art". I just don't think of Venetians having their own equivalent of flamingos in the yard!

These were part of the Venice Bianalle (sp).
