Dorsoduro is a pretty large area - if you were more specific I could give detailed advice.

However there is a branch of the Billa supermarket chain on Zattere at 1491 Dorsoduro. This is close to the San Basilio vaporetto landing stage. The entrance is a rather inconspicuous doorway in an old building fronting the canal but inside, whilst pretty cramped by British supermarket standards, it has an excellent range of foodstuffs and should meet all your requirements.

There are several other smaller "alimentari" scattered around and you will find stalls selling vegetables, fruit, fish etc most ornings in Campo Santa Margherita and also a couplein Calle nuova S. Agnese which runs between the Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art.

Rather more picturesque the last of the boats selling fruit and vegetables is tied up in Rio di S. Barnaba by Campo S. Barnaba in Dorsoduro.

Thanks - you are quite close to Campo Santa Margherita. If you walk from Campo S. Barnaba, past the floating vegetable boat and across the canal bridge into Rio Terra Canal you will find, as the Rio Terra swings round to the left that on your right there is the entrance to a small Supermercado just before you entre Campo Santa Margherita. Again quite cramped but reasonably stocked - possibly not as good as Billa but much closer to your apartment.

If you get fed up with catering for yourself there are a couple of good eating places very close to your apartment.

In Calle dei Cerchieri at 1280 is Al Vino Padovani which is open 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday but closed in a good deal of August. It is a good honest bacaro, useful for stand up meals at the bar but also a Trattoria if you sit down. Service, or more accurately the kitchen, begins to wind down soon after 8 p.m.

Just off Campo San Barnaba in Sottoportego del Casin dei Nobili 2765 is a competent Pizzerie called simply Casin dei Nobili and open Noon to 10.30 p.m.. It has a useful garden at the back for hot weather but is closed Monday.

Most useful for Sunday eating when other places are closed is the San Trovaso on Fondamenta Priuli on your way to Accademia. Best to book for 7 pm. on Sunday as often a queue

We just stayed in an apartment in the Dorsoduro and there's a nice Billa supermarket at the west end of the Zattere. It's near the San Basilio vaporetto station. It doesn't close in the afternoon and it's open on Sunday. Nice selection and reasonable prices.

Just back from a week in Venice, thanks Robert for your shopping tips. Visited both supermarkets and enjoyed there in store bread daily.

Siubhan- We will be staying in an apt on Calle Lunga San Barnaba in Dorsoduro- not too far from where you stayed. Tell us all the Dorsoduro details! Did you try any of the eating places Robert J suggested? Thanks Lyn

Dear Lyn we did not try any of these, there was a nice one on the Grand Canal near the Billa supermarket, watch the world go by and fairly reasonable. Watch out for the 12% service charge + the extra €5.00 per head sitting down charge. enjoy venice,
