Trains again: Venice to Florence

I've been looking at the Trenitalia website and would like some clarification from someone in the know. Trains seem to leave from Mestre or Santa Lucia stations. On the day we want to travel, the shortest time is for a train leaving from Mestre. We are staying near Piazza San Marco, so can you actually catch the train from the Mestre station or should I focus on the ones leaving from Santa Lucia station.

Thanks in advance

Since you stay in San Marco you should focus on Santa Lucia, which is Venice main station.

Mestre is the inland railway station, as you probably know Venice as a city has part of his territory in the "dryland" hence there is nothing nice to see there :)

If you really need to catch *that* train leaving from Mestre you might take the first train leaving Santa Lucia and stop in Mestre, actually all the trains leaving Santa Lucia has to stop in Mestre since the railway splits from there on (not before), you should anyway ask at the ticket counter for advice.

Have a nice trip!

If you are staying near Piazza San Marco then water bus lines No 1 and No 82 go from both San Zaccaria/San Marco and Vallaresso/San Marco landing stages down the Grand Canal to Ferrovia landing stage immediately in front of Santa Lucia station.

Once at Santa Lucia you have the choice - catch a direct train to Florence or take the short (1 euro) hop across the causeway over the lagoon to Mestre, and change to the Florence train. Whichever is the most convenient for you.

There is no direct water bus connection between the San Marco area and Mestre.
