surrounding towns

We have 8 days and were planning on spending 4 of them in Venice. We would like to see some of the smaller towns/villages (more in the country) that would not be to hard to get to either by train or car. Can anyone suggest a few interesting places that we might visit (either over night or day trips). thanks.

I agree with some of the other posters. I was in Venice for 4 nights in May and that was not nearly enough to really see much of Venice itself, though it did allow me to make brief visits to Murano, Burano & Torcello. I've heard that Padua, Verona etc. are nice and certainly worth a visit, but if this is your first time to Venice, spend the 4 days there, you'll be glad you did. There's so much beauty and uniqueness to enjoy in the city itself without worrying about visiting outlying cities during those short 4 days.

The food at the International Hotel Bertha was a pleasant surprise in both quality and value. Their wine list had great values also. I had a 90 Giacosa Barolo Villero for E65. It was a great place to unwind and ease into the rest of the trip.
