Venice to Lake Garda

We are staying in Venice for 3 days in july, afterwards we are staying in Garda for 10 days. What is the best way to get to Garda. Is the local bus o.k or are we best to hire a car? We intend to hire a car after we have been in Garda for a few days relaxing.

The quickest way to get to Lake Garda from Venice is probably to takle the train from Santa Lucia station. The main line to Milan runs along the south of Lake Garda with stations at Peschiera and Desenzano.

From either of these there is a good ferry service around the lake which will take you to the town of Garda.

For train timings and ticket prices check on www.trenitalia.it (English language version)

As an alternative to travelling across the Lake by ferry you could hire a car at Peschiera and drive along the coast road up the eastern side to the lake to Garda.

Your problem with the local bus service will be how much luggage do you have? Not all buses have much space to put your luggage and if the bus happens to be crowded you will have problems.

We will be staying at the Grand Hotel Fasano in Lake Garda and the hotel is picking us up from the Desenzano train station for 40, which we arranged by e-mail before leaving.
