Taxi to Chamonix ?

Hi,

It is possible to get a taxi (or public transport) from Courmayeur to Chamonix ? If so, any idea on how long it would take and the cost ?

I'm considering visiting Courmayeur in Feb, and interested to know if it's possible to sample the skiing in Chamonix for a day while I'm there.

Any help appreciated

Forget the taxi -- besides the fare, you would be charged the roundtrip tunnel toll, (currently 41.40 euro). But there is a good bus service -- http://www.savda.it/Orari/ao_chamonix.htm (look under 'ORARIO INVERNALE' - there are 3 daily departures.

If you take the bus it is difficult to ski as the bus leaves you at the train station and you then have to take public bus to the particular area where you decide to ski as there are a number of ski locations in the Cham valley. It does not leave much time for skiing but it can be done.

Are there any other ways of travelling between Chamonix and Courmayeur by public transport other than the 3 times a day bus? We are really trying to travel from Geneva to Courmayeur. All is simple as far as Chamonix, however, the bus times between Chamonix and Geneva really don't fit with our flight times.

Is Courmayeur served by a train or other bus company?

Thank you.

Courmayeur does not have a train station.

Have you considered taking the train from Geneva to Chamonix? You could also check bus schedules from Geneva’s airport to Chamonix.

Have you considered taking the train to Aosta and then the bus from Aosta to Courmayeur?

I beg to disagree with Vagabonda this time -- taking the train from Geneva to Aosta, although possible, would be extremely circuitous and involve several connections.

Besides the thrice daily bus from Chamonix to COurmayeur, however, SAVDA also has twice daily bus departures from Martigny to Aosta; Martigny is easily reached by Swiss rail from Geneva.

Other alternatives by public transport are simply not available.

I'm a little late to this conversation, but why don't you just take an ATS shuttle from the Geneva airport to Courmayeur? www.a-t-s.net. They're a van service that does both private and shared transfers. You might get a shared transfer which will be much faster than train/bus and a lot easier. I think it'd be worth the extra $$, and a lot less hassle than trains.

If you need to save a bit of money, maybe on the way back you could take the savda bus to Chamonix, maybe stay a night or two there to sample the skiing, and airport shuttle back to Geneva when you're ready to go. These shuttles only take an hour or so to get to Chamonix, maybe 2 hours to get to Courmayeur from the airport, and they'll drop you at your hotel.
