Driving from Paris to Aosta in October

Hi, I was planning to drive from Paris to Aosta in October 2013. Any tips/suggestions/tricks would be great to hear about from you. Especially regarding weather, road conditions, places to see on the way etc.

Thanks a lot in advance!

If you stick to the auto route it's an easy 6 to 7 hour drive. In May this year there was some major road work heading up the mountain side between Sallanches and Les Houches a few kilometres before the Mont Blanc tunnel entrance and so traffic was congested. I don't know if work will be finished by October or not. Traffic can also be backed up at the tunnel entrance for an hour or more when busy with truck traffic entering Italy. Signs on the autoroute in the area will post wait times.

Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable in October but normally roads are kept clear of snow and ice if the weather turns foul.

You'll be driving through Borgogne one of France's eminent wine regions so if you have time stop over a night in one of the towns and treat yourself to a great meal and a bottle of Burgandy. You can also stop off at one of the many 'caves' in the region and purchase a case or two of wine from local vineyards at relatively reasonable cost. If you like good white wine then stop off at Chablis a couple hours south east of Paris.

Thanks grivola, that's exactly what I was looking for! Bourgogne sounds like a great idea.
