Bolzano to st moritz

We are wanting to travel from Bolzano through merano to st moritz. Catch the bernina express to tirano. I have seen you need to catch several trains and a bus but it looks like an amazing area. Any suggestions on whether to stay at merano/mals or Bolzano or hints on areas.

1. Re: Bolzano to st moritz

EXACTLY when. Dates highly important

So what do you want to do exactly.

Bolzano to St Moritz then Bernina express back to Tirano??

Routing would be over Merano/Meran Malles/Mals then a bus from Malles to Zernez then a train to St Moritz all taking at least 5 hours sometimes closer to 6hrs.

www.sbb.ch Swiss rail will show you the train/bus routing over Meran.

What are you EXACTLY interested in.

Bolzano is a good central place for visiting other places in the area.

You can get the train to Merano/Meran but also the buses to the Dolomites.

Both the 350 and 170 buses go from Bolzano/Bozen to Ortisei/Sankt Ulrich.

The 350 carries on to Selva/Wolkenstein (Val Gardena). These services don't run that often however sometimes 2 hours or more between services; however the 170 bus runs more regularly to Siusi/Seis. It runs every 30mins or so and the journey only takes ~ 40mins. Every now and then the 170 carries on to Ortisei.

From Siusi/Seis you can go up to the Compatsch area of Alpe di Siusi/Seiseralm

You can use www.sii.bz.it to do local transport searches for the area of Süd Tirol. It will show you also local train connections as well as buses. You can also select "Timetables as PDF" just to see various connections (e.g. 170 and 350)

You may have already noted that many places in this region have both Italian and German names. This area "Süd Tirol" is basically anywhere north of Bolzano as far east as the Austrian border (north of Canazei & Cortina) and as far west as the Swiss border ( above Stelvio). The official languages in this region are both Italian and German. Over 70% speak German. Very much Austrian flavour in this region (as it used to be Austrian) and many wish they still were.

Dates are important. if interested in cable cars/mountains be aware that many lifts shut down by early October for the interim period before the ski season. Same things happen at the end of the ski season around early April. Again the lifts shut down with the earliest lifts opening for the summer season around Late May and the majority not until late June

That is great information. We will be over there approx 30/31 October. We were considering maybe stay in the Sud Tirol area one or two nights then in the st moritz area overnight and catch the train back to tirano before heading towards milan.

We will check all the areas you have discussed and transport. Thank you again for your help

Hi,

We stayed a few nights in Mals/Malles (Vinschgau/Val Venosta) at the Hotel Panorama.

biohotel-panorama.it/biohotel-panorama.html

Room prices include breakfast buffet and 4 course dinner. Both are excellent.

The Vinschgau/Val Venosta runs aprrox. from Meran/Merano to the Swiss border. Places of interest include:

The medieval walled town of Glurns/Glorenza
