Lienz

Is Lienz a good base if I wanted to visit the Tre Cime Dolomites and the Glosslockgner mountain in Austria. Are these trips possible by public transport.

LIENZ TO BRUCK OVER GROSSGLOCKNER

Lienz to Heiligenblut is ~ 1hr on the bus

http://www.oebb.at/busplan2013/500200.pdf

there are then link buses over the Grossglockner to Zell am See

Special bus service with the postbus - see downloads left hand side

LIENZ - TRE CIME

Much harder and not worth it

Tre Cime lies in the Veneto region of italy. This area comes under a different public transport network than Süd Tirol (San Candido & Dobbiaco)

Train Lienz to San Candido ~ 50mins

San Candido to Cortina - train to Dobbiaco then the 445 bus to Cortina ~ 1h05

The 445 bus from Dobbiaco/Toblach to Cortina goes past the turn off for Tre Cime (about 13km away)

You would have to get the 445 bus all the way to Cortina then get the Dolomitibus service to Tre Cime (~ 1hr)

So 3hrs of public transport not taking into account connections and waiting time.

KRONPLATZ

If you want to do something different you can get a train from San Candido to Percha.

At Percha train station is direct access to the Gondolabahn to the Kronplatz

SEXTEN DOLOMITEN

Or get a 446 bus from San Candido. Go down to Bad Moos and take the Rotwand cable car or take the bus all the way to the end (only 50minutes)

Hi AMerchant,

well, the Tre Cime are definitely accessible via public transport directly from Toblach/Dobbiaco. The bus however operates during the summer-timetable only, you'll find a timetable during summer on http://www.sii.bz.it/de/siipdftimetables (bus no. 445 - the number giftzwerg has already quoted was correct). it takes 55 Minutes to get you there from Toblach. and the Lienz-San Candido train continues also to Toblach, so on your way to the Tre Cime you'll need to change only once.

Have a good trip.

Gerd
