road trip--Lake como to Cannes--sites to see along the way?

I'm driving from Lake Como to Cannes--can anyone recommend any particularly scenic or interesting villages to visit on the way? We're not comitted to any particular route--could go via torino or genoa--so any suggestions would be appreciated. Tx.

The quick route is to take the A26 towards Genoa and then the A10 along the Ligurian Riveira, lots of places to stop off along the way, Vercelli & Novara on the upper Po valley, both with wonderful basilica's, and so many towns along the seaside (as long as you are not travelling in August!), my favourites are Noli and Albenga.

The slower scenic route is to take the mountain road, Asti-Alba-Bra-Cuneo-Ventimiglia, look for this route on Viamichelin, its a good raod, only a bit twisty in the last section, takes you past Piedmont's wine hills, to the alpine forests of the Maritime alps, and then over the top into the classic Mediteranean Olive groves. Many little places to stop on route.
