public transport

A quick recap please. Travelling from London, one would fly to Linate, catch airport bus to Milan Central and then train to Orta-Miasino in order to stay in Orta San Giulio. Would this be feasible for a few nights and then a night back in Milan (sometime in June)? Thanks!

Yes, feasible. The station is around 1 km from the village.

You could also fly to Milan Malpensa and get the bus to Novara http://www.stnnet.it/novaramalpensa.html - Piazza Garibaldi for the train station.

For current train times from Milano Centrale or Novara see http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html using a date this week to see fares. Times after May 5 are likely to be similar.

You would need a taxi from Orta Miasino station as it is in the village of Miasino nearly 3 Kms from orta San Giulio. There are not many trains that stop at orta miasino either. It may be better for you to fly to Milan malpensa , take the Alibus from MXP to Stresa and then either taxi or train to Miasino. Alternatively there is a bus from Stresa at 10am in the height of summer

I would say to walk from Orta station to Orta town is ok if you have only a backpack, but not if you have to carry a suitcase.

In this case I agree, you need a taxi.

Orta station actually is in a suburb called Legro (not Miasino).

Near the station you find the best pub of this area ..... if you arrive in the evening, enjoy a great beer!

The distance depends on where in Orta San Giulio you are going. Certainly my original 1 km is too little for most places. Equally, 3 km is excessive for many. For example, from the station to Piazza Mario Motta where the boats to the island go from is 1.9 km. That's too far to carry a heavy suitcase, but the OP seems only to be going for a couple of days.
