Traveling in Italy

You guys are wonderful with your advice, but I am so overwhelmed trying to determine the traveling. I have read numerous posts and trying to figure out how to read all the train schedules and determine which train works best, etc. Whether to ride the Red, or Silver train or the regional trains or the inter city trains and I think I have learned it is not necessary to buy tickets ahead of time? even in June? during tourist season.

Are there certain routes that we should definitely do a particular train line or bus, etc.

We are willing to travel 2nd class.

Thanks so much,

Here's my itinerary if anyone knows specifically about these towns and schedules.

flying in and out of Milan airport.

Milan to Mestre (outside of Venice)

Mestre to Florence

Florence to Rome

Rome to Siena

Siena back to Milan

Handy site:

Trains on Trenitalia, buy sooner for lower rates. 2nd class is fine. Bus travel use search box.

Next time investigate flying open jaw; avoid backtracking and save one hotel change.

Pleas note that in determining number of stops, each time you move you chew up at least half a day.

For the best prices on the fast trains, book now. Tickets for June went on sale in February, and the cheapest tickets will already have sold out on some trains. See www.trenitalia.com and www.italotreno.it

For the slow Regionale trains, there is no point in booking in advance. These are the trains that have no seat reservations and no discounts.
