Ascona/Lake Maggiore vs. Varenna/Lake Como

We need to spend a few days in Bellinzona and need to choose between Ascona or Lake Como/Varenna for 3-4 more days. We've been to Bellagio/Varenna/Lake Como before and think it's one of the most beautiful places in the world.

This time it might be more logistically convenient for us to just go to Ascona or to Lugano, rather than going over to Varenna . But we are wondering if we would be disappointed in Ascona/Lake Maggiore compared to Varenna/Lake Como?

Before we come over to the lakes we plan to be in the Dolomites for a week plus.

Would appreciate your thoughts opinions about comparison of the 2 places!

Lake Como is a wonderful place, but the region of Ascona-Locarno and valleys won't disappoint you! Ascona is often called the "Pearl of Lake Maggiore" for its cultural heritage as well as for its touristic offer. You don't mention the period of your stay... If you choose wintertime for visiting the region you could enjoy several walks along the lakeside, to Cardada (the mountain above Locarno with a magnificent view over the whole region), to Locarno and Minusio, to the wonderful and inspiring valleys of the region, just to mention some examples.

If you come before 8th January be sure not to miss Locarno on Ice, with its fun ice skating rink and igloo bars in the middle of Piazza Grande (the square where in August the International Film Festival of Locarno takes place). If the period of your stay is in Spring, a visit to the botanical gardens on the Islands of Brissago is a must for anyone staying in the region. The gardens bring together a great variety of exotic, subtropical plants, cultivated in the open air and laid out according to their geographical origins. The islands are open to the public from April til October.

The most known events of the region take place during summer: the Locarno Film Festival (August 1-11, 2012) and the JazzAscona festival (June 21 - July 1, 2012) among others.

From Bellinzona you will get there in just 20 minutes: by train or by car (in the latter case, just follow the motorway A2, exit Bellinzona south, following the signposting for Locarno and Lago Maggiore).

If you need more information you can always check out the official website of Lago Maggiore Tourist office (Swiss side) http://www.ascona-locarno.com/en/ or ask directly to info@ascona-locarno.com.

If you've already been to Lake como then lake Maggiore would be the obvious choice and you certainly won't be disappointed as it is lovely but remember Switzerland is very expensive compared to Italy.

If you've already been to Lake Como, then consider Lake Maggiore, possibly lovely Cannero Riviera (Italy), but also consider beautiful Lake Lugano and Lugano (town).
