Getting to Varenna from Switzerland

I am in the planning stages of a special 40th anniversary trip and am considering 2 nights in Zurich, 2 nights in Lucerne but with the main focus being 4 nights in Varenna. Any input or assistance on the difficulty, if there is difficulty, on taking trains to each of these destinations would be most appreciated. I am attempting to plan this myself without travel agency assistance but I may change my mind as this will be only our 2nd trip to Europe.

There is no difficulty - the Swiss rail system is outstanding, so there should be no difficulty at all for you.

It's a quick and easy train ride from the airport to Zurich, rail from Zurich to Lucerne, and Luzerne to Lugano.

SBB:

The Yellow Palm Express (bus)runs once daily from Lugano to Menaggio on Lake Como.

Then ferry from Menaggio to varenna.

To complement Vagabonda's (always helpful) information, in addition to the daily Palm Express bus from Lugano to Menaggio, SPT has more frequent departures on the same route: www.sptlinea.it/pdf/invernale_0708/C12.pdf
