You might read up on Milan, Verona, Padua, L. Garda and how to get from Milan to Como/Bellagio, Also consider Lake Maggiore. Can be done by train if you don't want to rent a car

Just to say we have been to Italy a few times and on each occasion have found the public transport wonderful. Links are very good from airport to town etc. Just do not make the mistake of trying to do too much in one trip you may end up to tired to enjoy anything.

Have a good trip

As mentioned above, public tranport (which is trains usually) works well. The one thing to work thru is whether or not you may too much luggage for that.

As to where else to consider, you could look as far far south as Tuscany and as far north as Switzerland. A good rule of thumb for planning is to keep your train rides less than five hours. So buy or borrow a guide book and decide what towns/cities interest you. The cities mentioned in No 1 above are good. You might also consider Vicenza for architecture, and Bologna and Padova. Padova is near Venice.
