1. Re: shopping

The lower town is the more modern part of Bergamo and has a full range of all the shops you would expect in a wealthy northern Italian city. I doubt there is much you cannot buy in Bergamo.

The Citta Alta - up the funicular railway is the gorgeous medieval walled town full of facinating places and some shops tucked away amongst its many splendors

Get train from Bergamo to Lecco which is southern tip of Lake como. Takes about 40 minutes. Really lovely shops there. Comes to life late afternoon when everything opens up. Some lovely arcades and boutiques. We found it better than Bergamo itself for shopping. We just got back!
