Train versus car - Milan to SML

We are coming from Milan (airport) to Santa Margherita for a week in September. Husband wants to have a car to travel to/from Milan and around. Everything I have read so far is against this idea. We will have at least 2 full suitcases plus carry ons, and there is no direct train from SML to Milan in the mornings (on the way back), so we will have to make 2 transfers. Plus if we won't make 4 pm train on the way from Mlan, the next one is at 6pm (2 hours wasted). We also want to travel around SML to see different towns on the coast. So, please tell me if the car still a bad idea and why.

There are morning direct trains to Santa Margherita at 06.07, 07.39, and one from Rapallo (four miles away by taxi) at 11.33. Otherwise a change is necessary.

If you want a car, have one, particularly if your hotel has its own parking. Some people are like a fish out water without one, and why ruin your holiday? And the car will certainly be a faster and easier method of transfer to and from the airport.

Travelling to see other towns on the coast can be much easier by train, particularly if visiting the Cinque Terre and Genoa. But you don't have to use the car all the time. The later in September you are going, the easier the parking problem will be.

Thank you! By "faster and easier" by car - trains are about 2.5 hour trip, and the car is? I have read it's 3hours+ traffic. Husband likes to drive and we car have done car trips in Spain, etc. So I just want to make sure it makes sence in this trip. Carrying suitcases around is not fun, but being stuck in traffic is not fun either. We will be there last week in September. Staying in Miramare, will check about parking.

That's 2.5 hours from Milano Centrale. From Malpensa, it's a minimum of 3.5 hours, and that assumes you are not having to wait around longer because you've just missed a train.

By car, http://www.viamichelin.com/ gives two hours 36 minutes from Malpensa. The website doesn't allow for traffic problems, and seriously underestimates travelling times on minor roads. But for a clear run on the autostrada with a confident and reasonably fast driver, it can be fairly accurate.
