There's a train about every 60-90 minutes from SML to Florence. They all require 1-2 train changes. The two easiest in the am are the 10:30 which requires 1 train change in Pisa, and the 11:36 which requires 1 train change in La Spezia. You can check it out at www.trenitalia.com and click on English at the top. All are about 3-4 hours in length.

Note that from Rapallo, only three miles away from Santa Margherita, there are slightly more direct trains to Pisa.

At some times of day, and with a one-year-old, it could therefore be easier to take a taxi to Rapallo rather than take the train from Santa Margherita Ligure itself.

We are planning our first tip to Italy, 15 days total.

We are undecided between the Amalfi coast, Pompei, Capri and Sta Margherita, along with Florence and Rome of course.

Any suggestions???

Thank you guys :)

Difficult question both arer very attractive and popular areas. Do you want beach type resorts, if so choice Santa Margherita, which has excellent beach facilities and also excellent train service to all the main places of interest.

On the other hand the Amalfi Coast has some superb coastal scenery and historical sites like Pompeii. Does have the disadvantage of no train service between Sorrento and Amalfi/Positano.

Both areas are about the same travel time from Rome but SML is certainly the easiest in this respect

Some pics of both
