Train timetables for Italy

We are travelling by train around most parts of Italy in October 2010 and was wondering what the best website would be to check out the timetables. Is it too early in June to expect October's timetable to be available?

Are timetables available in hard copy? Do we have to wait until we get to Italy to procure one of these?

Would be grateful for any advice. We will have a rail pass.

Thanks.

The old-style timetables, listing all the trains and their stops, are not available anywhere. You can get train times and costs for particular journeys from www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html but it is unlikely you will be able to book through this site, as it seldom accepts cards issued outside Europe. If you have problems, just buy the train tickets in Italy.

Do not get a rail pass: it will almost certainly cost more than just buying point-to-point tickets. It will not even be more convenient, as all the faster trains have seat reservations so you would have to go to stations to make the seat reservations and pay extra for them.

Thank - you Sydneynick,

You have convinced me about the rail pass. Other travelers have said the same thing and I am now going to rethink that one.

You advice is much appreciated.

We also changed our minds about a pass after reading here.

I listed all the train journeys we plan to take, went to trenitalia and got the costs, and compared that to the cost of the pass + the reservation fees. We're saving over $250 by buying point-to-point tickets!
