Non-drivers in Verrucole, Tuscany?

We are two non-drivers who are hoping to spend 2 weeks in a cottage in Verrucole, Tuscany. Mostly we want to chill out but we would like to explore around a bit and definitely go into Florence and Pisa for a day each. Does anybody know how practical this will be without a car - maybe we should rent some bikes?

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!!

Many thanks,

There are train and bus services in the area, but it's kind of far away -- it takes about 75 minutes by train from Piazza al Serchio (nearest station) to Lucca, or 3 hours to Florence (one way).

Train timetables on www.trenitalia.com, bus timetables on www.clapspa.it.

Bikes could be good for moving around, but bear in mind that the station and main road are at the bootm of the valley, and you are way up!
