If you go parallel to the coast, don't miss the marble quarries at Carrera.

Or, if you like scenery, take the ordinary road (not the autostrada) towards Parma. Shortly before you reach Aulla, turn right and head for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. This takes you over a pass and then down the Serchio valley to Lucca.

If you are reall adventurous, there is a mountain road that runs from Querceta (a bit south of Carrera) through the mountains to Castelnuovo.

Is it a nice ocean view drive down the coast road? Love both the ocen and scenery. Not sure which way to go?

The coast road has very pretty mountain scenes almost all the way but it's an autostrada so it'll only lasts 45 minutes. What are your interests? Nature, history, museums? Leaving La Spezia you could visit Lerici, thenenjoy some panoramas while driving around the Carpione Promontory through the forest Park of Montemarcello, walk around the exquisite village of Montemarcello or the tiny resort of Bocca di Magra or the historic center of Ameglia, and still have time for another stop on the way to Lucca. Have a look at our blog at www.apathtolunch.com, especially for Lerici and Ameglia.

Thanks MikeM I will have a look at your blog. My interest? Both nature and history. Just want to soak up as much as I can on such a short trip.

Note that the bridge over the Magra River near its mouth at Ameglia/Bocca di Magra/Fiumaretta is out of service due to last year's floods. It won't be ready until mid to late summer. This necessitates backtracking upriver a few miles to cross the river near Sarzana where there's also an autostrada entrance.
