Trip from Lucca to Cinque Terre....

We will be staying in Lucca in early July and thought a day trip to Cinque Terre would be wonderful. I understand it would be best to catch a train in La Spezia to Cinque Terre. Does anyone know how to get to the train station there? Is there parking available? There would be 5 adults and two bambini's, 4 and 1 in two cars. Any idea of what the train would cost? Are we nuts to try to do this with the kids along? Any idea of what the boat trips cost up and down the coast? Am I just an idiot for asking all these questions? ( Please don't answer the last one.)

Any information you could give would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

Here's another suggestion since you have cars and alot of people. You can drive from Lucca to the town of Levanto(about 1 hr). This is the next town North of the Cinque Terre Villages. It's easier access off the autostrada to Levanto versus driving into La Spezia which is a larger city and the parking in LaSpezia is mostly paid street parking. There is plenty of inexpensive parking at the Levanto train station in a large parking lot. From here, you are 5 min to the first village(Monterosso) of the Cinque Terre via train. In Monterosso, you can catch a ferry then see the villages from the sea or continue seeing the other villages via train or walking.

AT the Levanto train station, you can buy your park and train passes for the Cinque Terre. Check their website for the latest prices for a 24 hour pass for Cinque Terre. I just heard that the train is not included in the pass now, but don't know that for sure. Anyway, the prices are quite reasonable for sightseeing overall.

To answer your last question, no, it makes perfectly good sense and makes for a wonderful daytrip from Lucca to go to CT for the day.

Enjoy!!

You might want to check some of the most recent posts for some options. Seeing the Cinque Terre from Lucca is possible, but just don't try to do too much. There was a previous post about only one day in the Cinque Terre. Some of that information might be helpful to you.

Consider driving to Lerici, parking your car in the town's lot, and boating over.

Driving to La Spezia may not be your best option. Take the train from Pisa. Pisa to La Spezia is about an hour, and then you can easily switch to the local train that services the Cinque Terre.

You can also drive all the way to the Cinque Terre, and park in one of the lots. All the towns have parking, except Corniglia, and hourly shuttles taking into town.

Pick one town. Hike to the next for lunch, and boat back. You will have the experience of both hiking and boating the coast. The view by boast is especially beautiful.

Since you have young children, you might want to consider the easiest hike, actually almost a walk, from Riomaggiore to Manarola. That would be good, because it's also the closest town to La Spezia, and Manarola has great places for you to stop for lunch.

Each town has stand to buy tickets for the ferry. An all day pass, definitely worth it costs about E12. Without the all day pass, tickets between towns is about E3.

You could also get the train from Lucca to La Spezia changing at Viareggio. The 8.31 and 10.31 from Lucca both have journey times of 1hr 21 mins to La Spezia these may also stop in Monterosso.

I'm sure it would be if there was a bus, but there isn't. The demand couldn't possibly support a bus on that route.
