Genoa to Rome

Hi,

I will be disembarking from an MSC crusie at Genoa, and was wondering how much it is to catch a train from Genoa to Rome?

Also, which train station is closest to the MSC shipping port?

How often do the trains run between Genoa and Rome?

Thanks!

UPDATED FARES:

Fares have changed significantly, to the detriment of the air option:

Cheapest air fare Genoa/Rome: 73 Euros on Alitalia, PLUS at least 10 Euros land transportation = 83 Euros total all-in (or more). Blu-Express is no longer flying this route, giving Alitalia a monopoly.

Cheapest train fare (Trenitalia "SUPER ECONOMY" fare, 9 Euros), on EITHER the Frecciabianca or the Intercity train.

Note: Higher discount fares ("SUPER ECONOMY" and "ECONOMY") are also offered (e.g. 19-29-39 Euros). These fares are all non-refundable, and the SUPER ECONOMY fares are also non-changeable. To get the lowest fare, you must book VERY early (up to 120 days beforehand, as long as schedules have been uploaded).

Regular, unrestricted train fare ("BASE" fare): 58.50 Euros on the Frecciabianca, or 44 Euros on the Intercity train.

NOTE: In some cases, the Intercity takes only 30 minutes longer than the Frecciabianca. (In other cases, the Frecciabianca is one hour faster). However, the Frecciabianca is a "nicer" and more modern train, with snack/beverage service offered, and a "roving rest room cleaner" who supposedly keeps the wash rooms relatively clean.

FACE-OFF: The train edges out the plane, in terms of overall travel convenience AND cost (even at the "BASE" fare). Note that the air option is nearly TWICE as expensive as the Intercity train with the "BASE" fare, and NINE TIMES as expensive as the train with the 9-Euro "SUPER ECONOMY" fare!!!

On http://www.trenitalia.com look for trains from Genova Piazza Principe (the nearest station to the Cruise Terminal) to Roma Termini. There is an English option at the top of the homepage.

http://www.trenitalia.com is an easier website on which to look for advance reductions than http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html, as with the latter site you must select trains individually then click Continue to see reduced fares.
