Currently €17.50 on the hourly fast trains and €11.75 on the Regional trains. Plus €10 if you are coming from Malpensa Airport.

Fares may change later this month.

First Class is much less dear than English trains, so you could consider that - I think it was only €24-ish. You don't get any free tea/ coffee but legroom is more than second class. Many trains are compartments, and there's much more chance of vacant spaces either side in first.

If you buy your ticket from an automated machine, watch out for people trying to 'help' you in Milan. They are usually honest, but annoying. When the train plan invites you to select your place, it always shows an 'open-corridor' train rather than compartments, so if it is a compartmented train, your seat, mysteriously, should be free, but not what you expected.

There are no ticket-tags on reserved seats like in England, so if someone is occupying your reserved seat, make sure you are in the correct carriage, then show it to the occupier politely, and they usually move without a fuss.
