I would doubt that there is a more direct route. I think we went through about 4 00 p.m last year on our way from Aix to La Spezia a bit of build of traffic up on the west side but once past the airport it was ok
Thanks, that might help to know when we are in the midst of traffic....
In any event, if you stay on the autostrada you will not drive through Genoa at all, so city traffic (which may be horrendous) won't affect you.
There is no better route.
Obviously the best time would be in the middle of the night! But otherwise, avoid mornings about 7.30 to 9.30, and less vitally, maybe evenings 1700-1900. There are also small lunchtime peaks, but I can't time these exactly as I don't drive to Genoa very often..
Any lane closures due to roadworks can generate a jam, and these seem to happen regularly. Maybe you were caught by this last time? Friday afternoon/evenings in August would also be well worth avoiding.
it's a nice thought that city traffic won't affect you at all, but at peak times much of the traffic is driving into or out of the city, and even around it from one side to the other. The autostrada is definitely very overloaded near Genoa, and I don't like driving on it. But it's true that once you come off the autostrada onto the city roads, it's much worse.
