Genoa to Cinque Terre

We're planning to arrive in Genoa on a Tuesday in May and make our way to the Cinque Terre by train over the next few days. We're wondering whether to stay in Genoa for a couple of days and visit some of the villages as a day trip (Santa Margharita, Portofino and Camogli) from Genoa and then take another train all the way to Cinque Terre, or would it make more sense to stop in several villages to look around while training from Genoa to Cinque Terre? Any suggestions for an itinerary that makes sense, is easy and budget friendly?

Just under an hour depending which train you get.

Thanks LoveToRoam. Wasn't sure how accurate the timetable was...

And SydneyNick (who's being oh so helpful with his clever replies) isn't actually a knowing authority at all... In fact, one on one he admits never having done the journey. Probably never been to Italy either.

Makes you wonder why people wish to spend time providing expert opinions on forums they have little experience with.

SidneyNick's reply was in fact very helpful. The timetables show that the trains from Genova Piazza Principe to Santa Margherita Ligure take from around 30 minutes to around an hour.

And that the Volabus runs only once an hour for much of the day.

Your chances of making the Airport to Santa Margherita in one hour are therefore very low. if you are talking about time after exiting the Arrivals hall. If you have to wait nearly an hour for the Volabus, and then arrive at a time when you have to wait for a slow train, the journey might even take nearly three hours.

And that doesn't account for time spent buying tickets (even the ticket machines can be time-consuming if you are using them for the first time, and queues at booking offices can be long), and the possibility of late trains - around 20% in Liguria. And if, say, you've bought a ticket for the faster but more expensive InterCity trains, you cannot use this ticket on Regional trains nor vice-versa.
