Genoa itself has more gravel, stony or rocky beaches.

Inside the city, close to major hotels, you can choose from one of the equipped beaches along the Corso Italia promenade (probably the most expensive is Nuovo Lido); there's even a stripe of free beach.

Further from the center, on the east side (on the way to Nervi), there are some not bad equipped beaches at Quarto dei Mille (Bagni Europa or Bagni Doria).

On the other side, there aren't very "child friendly" beaches; close to the airport, at Multedo, there is Penelope Beach, packed with locals.

The perfect beach you have in mind is at Celle Ligure, a wonderful sea resort at around 40km west from the center: white fine sand and a clear blue sea (if you are willing to catch a train, it's around 1hr).

In any case, both on the west and east Riviera, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of wonderful beaches.
